China Dazhou Yuanjiu Mountain Climbing Festival　

　
　　Dazhou Mountain Climbing Festival has a long history of over one thousand years. On the day of "Yuanjiu" (the ninth day of the first lunar month) all citizens follow the tradition of climbing up the mountains nearby along the path， which takes on a spectacular and fantastic scene of the sightseeing， rarely seen in the other parts of China. Tradition has it that in A.D. 815， Yuan Zhen (779 - 831) who was later called Yuanjiu for the date of his parting， a poet as well as an official in the Tang Dynasty， was relegated to Tongzhou (the former name of Dazhou) as Sima (Minister of War in ancient China). Tongzhou was a sparse and remote place in the control of the local villains at that time. After he assumed office， he adhered to and contributed much to having an honest and clean governance and made every efforts to benefit the local people a lot， so he was highly praised and worshipped. Yuan Zhen was transferred to Henan in the year of A.D.818. The day when he left was the ninth day of the first lunar month. All the town people， of their own free will， climbed onto the top of the Cuiping Mountain in the South and the Phoenix Mountain in the North， to bid farewell with reluctant parting. From then on， the custom and tradition of climbing hills on the day of "Yuanjiu" has been kept in Dazhou. On the ninth day of the first lunar month every year， all men and women， the old and the young， go outside in groups and compete in climbing the hills and ascending the height to enjoy the distant view， despite it rains or shines， in honor of this good official. The strong will of reaching the peak and never giving up has remained until today. On the occasion of climbing the mountains and enjoying a far view， Heaven praying for the bliss， people are looking forward to sweeping away the decline and the old in the past year， ushering in the new year to wish for everything going well.　Liang Shangquan， a famous contemporary Dazhou poet， ever composed such a poem: Dazhou in ancient time was named Tongzhou， with green mountains and water flowing around; Annual climbing on the ninth day to commemorate Yuanjiu， often the tour to the Phoenix is accompanied by the poetic soul.

　　To create an urban brandname of "a celebrity， a famous mountain， and an impressive festival"， Dazhou Municipal Government and Municipal Committee show great respect for the public customs and opinions， formally set up the "China Dazhou Yuanjiu Mountain Climbing Festival" (approved by the Dazhou Municipal People‘s Congress Standing Committee on June 20th， 2006)， to cherish the memory of our predecessor， and as an important opening-up window， to show the cultural charm of Dazhou， the expansion of foreign economic relations and cultural exchanges and the development of Dazhou tourism， to promote the construction of the strong city based on economy and culture in the Qin-Ba area. The theme of Mountain Climbing Festival is "Height ascending year after year and every people making progress". Its rich and colorful activities include artistic performances， competitions of mountain climbing， fun games， photographic exhibitions of art and calligraphy， games of poems reading and reciting on the square， visits to the Red Army culture， scenic tours and sports contests. The city people all go out for a far view， and even the tourists and foreign friends are attracted to participate in such traditional activities. "Yuanjiu Mountain Climbing Festival" has been registered in the Trademark Office of the General State Administration of Industry and Commerce， as an uban cultural festival brand of Dazhou。
